Europe Adds More Than 1 bcm of New Biomethane Capacity
Installed biomethane production capacity reached 8.2 bcm per year by the end of Q2 2026, up 17 percent compared to 2025, according to the European Biomethane Map, developed in cooperation with Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE).
Investor appetite also remains strong, with investment commitments reaching €36 billion, a significant increase from last year’s reported investments (€28 billion), according to the Biomethane Investment Outlook. This growing investor confidence underscores the sector’s significant acceleration potential, provided the right regulatory conditions are in place.
If fully realised, these investments are expected to deliver 9 bcm/year of additional biomethane production capacity by 2030, strengthening Europe’s domestic energy supply and contributing to the EU’s decarbonisation objectives.
Construction begins on £35m anaerobic digestion facility at SUEZ’s Ellington site
SUEZ has begun construction of a £35 million anaerobic digestion (AD) facility at its Ellington site in Northumberland, part of the infrastructure needed to support the rollout of food waste collections across Northumberland and the North East.
Once operational, the facility is expected to process up to 50,000 tonnes of food waste annually, producing a nutrient-rich fertiliser product alongside enough renewable gas to power around 5,500 homes.
Italy awards 6 TWh in first commercial biomethane sale to six shippers
Italy's state energy agency GSE has selected six gas shippers to purchase 6 TWh of biomethane for the 2026/2027 thermal year, in the first competitive sale of renewable gas withdrawn from producers under the country's incentive schemes. Enel, Eni and Società Gas Rimini were awarded framework agreements for the lot covering biomethane destined for the transport sector, while Burgo Energia, Iren and Axpo Italia secured the lot for other uses, with results published on Monday.
The tender, launched in June, offered up to 3,000 GWh per lot, each divided into three stocks of 1,000 GWh, for delivery between 1 October 2026 and 30 September 2027. Winning shippers must also guarantee additional availability of 15% of their allocated quantities to accommodate any increases in production.
Europe’s growing biomethane sector highlights the strategic role of gas infrastructure
As the European Commission prepares its upcoming Energy Security Package, the debate is increasingly shifting beyond short-term filling targets towards the longer-term role of gas storage in safeguarding Europe against systemic shocks and supply disruptions.
Europe’s biomethane sector has reached a new milestone. Installed biomethane production capacity has surpassed 8 bcm per year for the first time, reaching 8.2 bcm / year by the end of Q2 2026 after adding more than 1 bcm of new capacity in just one year; a 17% increase compared to 2025.
Published jointly by Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE) and the European Biogas Association (EBA), the seventh edition of the European Biomethane Map confirms that Europe’s renewable gas market continues to gather momentum. The number of biomethane plants has increased from 1,678 to 1,974 over the past year, with 327 new facilities commissioned, demonstrating continued investment and confidence in Europe’s domestic renewable gas sector.
