RNG in North America Experiences Growth as BIOGAS AMERICAS 2025 Sets New Attendance and Exhibitor Records
The American Biogas Council reported that BIOGAS AMERICAS 2025, held April 28–30 in Denver, Colorado, broke previous records with over 2,000 attendees and 340 exhibitors across 100,000 square feet of exhibit space - a 30% increase compared to 2024. The event highlighted the rapid growth and innovation within the biogas and RNG industries across North America.
Biogas from organic waste can power and heat homes, fuel vehicles, or generate electricity, and organic fertilizer is a byproduct of biogas production which helps support soil health.

Brazil's New Biomethane Legislation Aims for Twenty-Fold Production Increase
Natural gas suppliers in Brazil must reduce up to 10% of all their greenhouse gas emissions after the approval of the Fuel for the Future law. Starting in 2026, at least 1% of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions from producers and importers must be abated using biomethane commercialization or credits. Regulators can revise the target annually, but no deadline has been set for reaching the 10% abatement goal.
Given the country's 2024 demand, meeting the 10% target would require 5.1 million cubic meters per day (MMcmd) of biomethane—around eight times the existing operational capacity of 0.61 MMcmd and twenty times the current average production of 0.25 MMcmd.

Washington governor signs laws regulating landfills, expanding organics service and more
Gov. Bob Ferguson signed five laws, including ones that affected renewable natural gas, PFAS in biosolids and plastic bags. One of the Bill, House Bill 1409, has some focus on RNG.
The law sets a more aggressive timeline than prior regulations on which fuel suppliers must reduce the carbon intensity of the fuels they supply. Suppliers must now reduce the intensity by 45% by 2038, compared with 2017 levels. The change is seen as advantageous for the RNG industry and may see more RNG demand due to its low carbon intensity score as a result of the more stringent standard.

Biogas Market Awaits RFS Guidance; Plus RNG News from Waste Management, Viridi, Vision
The U.S. EPA is overdue to set new alternative fuel targets under the Renewable Fuel Standard. The market for transportation fuels made from biogas may be suffering as a result. EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin has set out a busy regulatory (or deregulatory) agenda over the first 100 days of President Donald Trump’s term, but one regulation he’s left untouched is the Renewable Fuel Standard. The regulation sets a certain amount of non-petroleum fuel credits that refiners and importers of petroleum-based fuels must acquire in a given year, which plays an important role in creating demand for the fuels.
The U.S. EPA initially set those levels, known as Renewable Volume Obligations, annually, but it chose to set the targets for three years in 2023. With those targets set to expire at the end of this year, many fuel producers are wondering how aggressive the Trump administration will be for the next round of RVOs.

New Poll Shows Broad Support for Federal Investments in U.S. Biogas Production
A new poll released today by the American Biogas Council (ABC) shows 3 out of 4 voters support increasing government investment for U.S. biogas production. Biogas is energy captured from organic materials like manure, food waste and wastewater solids as they break down. It can be used to power and heat homes, fuel vehicles, and generate electricity. In addition, the process produces nutrient-rich organic fertilizer that offers a sustainable alternative to chemical fertilizers.
According to the data, 74% of respondents support increasing U.S. government investment in domestic biogas production, and 77% support increasing U.S. biogas production. The data also show that 3 in 4 Americans support the use of both energy tax credits (72%) and direct legislative funding to encourage and expand biogas production on farms across the country (79%).

RNG Growth in India as Maharashtra Approves Biogas Project in Mumbai
The Maharashtra state government has approved the transfer of 18 acres of land at Deonar from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to Mahanagar Gas Ltd (MGL) to establish two compressed biogas plants with a combined capacity to process 1,000 tons of wet waste per day. The project will be executed in two phases and is part of the central government's Gobardhan scheme to promote urban biogas infrastructure. MGL anticipates annual revenues of approximately C$12 million from the sale of compressed biogas, which can also be used as auto fuel.
